I got up and started collecting my things, thinking about why Coach Ward was crying the night before at the party.

Chapter 18

A howling wind had picked up by the time I left the tavern, and big, chunky flakes of snow were shooting horizontally through the air into my back. But thanks to the hot whiskey cider, I was feeling relatively warm as I walked through the woods back to the pie shop.

I walked along the muddy, snowy path through the swaying trees as the sky darkened, mulling over what Harold had told me about Coach Ward.

The weekend that was supposed to be one of the best for Jack and his family was turning out to be a complete disaster.

And though I was trying to help, maybe it would be best to just stay out of it entirely.

After all, what could I do? I wasn’t any sleuth. That was why a portion of my tax dollars went to the Pohly County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Trumbow – for them to solve these kinds of things. Meanwhile, I was just a pie baker. A pie baker who really needed to focus on her own business and life instead of getting tangled up in things that really weren’t any—

A thundering crack suddenly echoed from somewhere behind me in the woods – a noise so loud, all the air rushed out of my lungs.

When I came down to earth again, I stopped dead in my tracks and listened for more.

I slowly turned around to face where the noise had come from. My eyes hurriedly scanned the shadowy trunks of the pine trees, looking for the source of the sound. But an eerie silence had fallen over the woods.

I had known the wilderness surrounding Christmas River to be generally safe. I wouldn’t walk the trails alone if I thought otherwise. But there were occasional stories about cougar sightings in the area. And while the big cats were beautiful and majestic, they could be incredibly dangerous as well.

Additionally, there were people to worry about out here, too. Folks who liked the forest for the privacy it offered – there were sometimes rumors of drug deals and unsavory types wandering around. And occasionally, those stories made headlines in the local newspapers.

I held my breath, waiting for more as the snowfall began to intensify.

After a while, I couldn’t take the tension anymore.

“Hello?” I said in a shaky voice. “Is somebody out th—”

That’s when I saw it.

A large shadow suddenly moved through the choked pine branches.

And the sound of breaking wood exploded from the darkness.

I decided that I wasn’t going to stick around to find out anymore.
